The Mini-Pitch Legacy Project is a transformative investment in community sport across British Columbia. As a legacy of the FIFA World Cup 2026™, this partnership between the Province of B.C., viaSport. BC, and Vancouver Whitecaps FC will install professional-quality mini-pitches in communities throughout the province. This project turns underused spaces into permanent, community-owned soccer facilities, supported by vibrant grassroots programming designed to serve thousands of participants for years to come.

What is a mini pitch?

Mini-pitches are versatile, durable, modular outdoor systems. They are designed to transform under-resourced or under-utilized areas into high-quality, low-barrier sport infrastructure. While the primary focus is soccer, these weather-resistant surfaces are adaptable for other sports, making them true year-round community hubs.

Each mini-pitch site is engineered for safe, durable performance.

A standard 60’ x 120’ (18m x 36m) playing surface.

A pro-grade synthetic turf system with non-infill technology (which eliminates the need for crumb rubber) and rapid drain technology (to handle British Columbia’s climate and provide superior shock absorption for player safety).

Includes professional-grade fencing, goals, and accessible gates.

Every pitch features universal design elements, including zero-threshold entry points to ensure inclusive access for athletes of all abilities.

Who is The Mini-Pitch legacy Project for?

This project exists to serve communities that have historically lacked support from traditional sport and recreation investments. We prioritize:

  • Indigenous Communities: Ensuring meaningful representation and authentic partnerships with First Nations and Indigenous-led organizations.
  • Under-Resourced Areas: Communities with a demonstrated shortage of quality recreation infrastructure.
  • Priority Youth: Children and youth facing barriers to participation due to poverty, disability, or newcomer status.
  • Grassroots Programs: Organizations committed to accessible, affordable participation rather than elite competition.

To ensure equitable benefits across the entire province, the project utilizes a strategic regional approach. Mini-pitch installations are distributed across all eight economic regions of British Columbia:

  • Cariboo
  • Kootenay
  • Mainland / Southwest
  • Nechako
  • North Coast
  • Northeast
  • Thompson / Okanagan
  • Vancouver Island / Coast

We have committed to a minimum of two mini-pitches per region to ensure that rural and remote communities have equal access to the project’s benefits as urban centers.
